UN Report on Syria: Syrian Government Not Guilty for Chemical Attack?

Syria: ANNA-news in Jobar

UN Sources: Report by inspectors won`t blame Syrian government for chemical attack in suburbs of Damascus.

According to a new report, UN-based diplomats have stated that the upcoming report by the team of UN experts, which were in Syria in order to investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons (e.g. poison gas) and especially the alleged use of toxic gas in a chemical attack in suburbs (e.g. Jobar) of the capital Damascus, will not blame the government of Syria for this chemical attack near Damascus on August 21.

However, it is still a sad situation that the UN team of chemical experts, leaded by the Swedish arms expert Ake Sellström, was not able to investigate the area in Khan al-Assal near the strategically important city of Aleppo (Halab).

Of course, although it is stated by this new report that UN-based diplomats have already said that the upcoming report by the UN team of experts, who were in Syria in order to investigate and probe the alleged use of chemical weapons (e.g. Sarin nerve agent) in the conflict in Syria will not blame the Syrian government for the chemical attack in suburbs of Damascus on August 21, this does not mean much. It can either be correct or just be another rumour.

However, under consideration of the situation on the battlefields in Syria and the successful military operations by the units of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the last weeks, as well as the distance between the relevant suburbs of Damascus and the home of President al-Assad, but also due to the situation that videos from that day confirm that the Syrian soldiers did not carry gas masks, it was already very questionable and even far-fetched to claim that the units of the Syrian Army would have used chemical weapons (e.g. toxic gas) in suburbs of Damascus against foreign-backed terrorists and/or Syrian civilians on August 21. Not to mention the reports by the team of ANNA-News.

Further, the UN inspectors are only authorized to conclude whether chemical weapons (e.g. Sarin gas / nerve agent) have been used in Syria and they are not able and authorized to assign the responsibility for the use of chemical weapons, as already mentioned in another article from today. In addition, also the Foreign Policy Magazine reported this situation and it is absolutely correct.

According to the new report about the investigation of the UN team in terms of the chemical weapons use in Syria and their upcoming report about their findings in Syria, it is also stated that the possible evidence of the UN team of experts are based on spent ammunition, spent rocket casings, and several tests of soil, urine samples, and blood in laboratories, on the use of chemical agents and toxic gas in Syria.

The chemical inspectors of the UN, under the lead of the Swedish arms expert Ake Sellström, have left Syria suddenly on August 31. However, they were at least able to collect several samples as a part of their investigation of the alleged chemical attack in suburbs of Damascus (e.g. Jobar) on August 21. But as stated, it is still very questionable and also sad why the place of attack in Khan al-Assal, near the Syrian city of Aleppo, was not investigated.

A UN diplomats said today that he knows that the UN team of experts that were in Syria have gotten “very rich samples” in regards of biomedical and environmental samples, and that the team of experts were also able to carry out some interviews with victims, doctors and nurses in the capital of Syria as well as in suburbs of Damascus. According to this Western diplomat, although the statement is a bit strange, the UN team of experts under the lead of Ake Sellström seem to be “very happy with the wealth of evidence they got.”

It was further mentioned today that the report by the UN inspectors in regards of the investigation of the use of chemical weapons in Syria could be published on Monday. At least, the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius made the statement today morning that a (first) report by the inspectors of the United Nations (UN) will probably be published on next Monday.

And the report will say, so the Foreign Minister of France, that “there was a chemical massacre” in Syria. However, the report will certainly not blame the Syrian government for this “chemical massacre” in Syria. But to be honest, the report will also not blame the foreign-backed terrorists (probably).

As stated, it is just about whether chemical weapons were used or not in the Syrian conflict and in regards of this report and the short time of the UN experts in Syria, it is especially about the alleged use of chemical weapons in an attack near Damascus on August 21. Under consideration of the statement by the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, it seems that a chemical attack happened on August 21. The rest remains to be seen..
