Iran and Turkey: Foreign Ministers talk about Syria and Egypt

The Foreign Minister of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, and his counterpart of the Turkish regime, Ahmet Davutoglu, have met and talked about regional developments and current events in the Middle East. Of course both Foreign Ministers of Iran and Turkey especially debated the topics Syria and Egypt; the Syrian conflict and the military overthrow of the President Mohamed Morsi by the Egyptian army.

The meeting took place in Turkey and the Foreign Minister of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, arrived in the country on Friday with a high-ranking delegation from Tehran. The Foreign Minister of Iran will not stay very long in Turkey but both Foreign Ministers will discuss the major regional developments and the possibility to increase the bilateral ties of Iran and Turkey.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, said to the question about the opinions and viewpoints of Iran on the regional developments and the situation in Syria that the Iranian government follows the basic policy of respecting the public opinions and demands in the neighbouring countries. Ali Akbar Salehi further said in response to this question, that the public demands in the neighbouring countries need to be fulfilled within the important framework of domestic political negotiations and without any foreign meddling or interference.

In terms of the military overthrow of the Egyptian President and Islamist Mohamed Morsi, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Ali Akbar Salehi, said that the Egyptian people have the full right to determine their fate and that the decisions by the Egyptians “is respected by all” and he hopes that the democratic trend that was initiated in the North African country “will be lasting and become stronger by the day”.

Ali Akbar Salehi further stressed that the consolidation of a national unity and the solidarity in Egypt by the unity of the Egyptian elites and all the other relevant groups in Egypt is very important. In addition to this statement, the Iranian Foreign Minister also said that the constructive stances of the instrumental regional country would be able to establish an enduring democracy in different regional states.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also praised the increasing of the ties between Iran and Turkey and said that this expansion of ties between Tehran and Ankara is positive. He further underlined that it is still important to further expand the ties in terms of cultural arenas, economy and the bilateral cooperation between the both countries. The short visit should help to boost the mutual cooperation.

The Turkish Foreign Minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, said in terms of his meeting with the Iranian counterpart and the debates about Egypt and Syria that Turkey also wants to boost the ties between Tehran and Ankara and that he already briefed his Iranian counterpart on the opinions and viewpoints by the Turkish regime in the important regional developments and especially in the events in Syria and Egypt.
