Syria: Iran and Turkey urge Democratic Reforms

Library of Celsus, Ephesus, Turkey.

Turkey will probably never join the European Union (EU).

While the Minister for the Affairs of the EU from Turkey, Egemen Bagis, has stated in a new article that Turkey may never become a member of the European Union (EU), the Iranian lawmaker and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has announced that the administration of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Turkish government in Ankara have agreed on the need for democratic reforms in Syria and an end to the terrorist acts in the Arab country.

Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said in a new statement that Iran and Turkey agreed on the need for democratic reforms in Syria and that both countries want political solutions to end the armed terrorism in the Arab country. The announcement by the Iranian lawmaker comes after other Iranian officials have recently said that Tehran supports the current political system in Syria and that the Syrian people should be allowed to themselves decide about their destiny and system, without any foreign interference in the internal affairs of Syria.

Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani made this new announcement in regards of Syria after his meeting with the Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek in the Iranian capital, Tehran. Ali Larijani added that Turkey and Iran “fortunately” would share a common stance on “the ugly issue of terrorism” in Syria and that Ankara and Tehran believe in democratic reforms for Syria and that such reforms on the basis of democracy will be able to resolve the Syrian conflict.

However, it is already known and even confirmed that the Turkish government of Prime Minister Erdogan supports the armed terrorist groups in their fighting against the secular government of President al-Assad. Turkey supports these terrorist groups with weapons, money and other means to transform Syria into a real hinterland of Turkey and to show the West that Turkey is a willing ally and should be allowed to join the European Union (EU).

Not to mention the ideas of the Turkish government to expand the Turkish region and its cooperation with the Israeli regime in Tel Aviv. But “unfortunately”, it seems that the Iranian administration has forgotten these machinations by Turkey, which also destabilize the Middle East and boost the terrorism in the region.

Iran’s Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani also said in his statements after his meeting with the Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek in Tehran yesterday evening, that the officials of Iran, Turkey, and Iraq have agreed to find a diplomatic and political solution to the Syrian conflict and the crisis in the Arab country. He stated that Tehran hopes that the visit of the Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek will help to solve the regional issues in the Middle East and to increase the possibilities to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis, which will then hopefully be able to end the terrorism in the Arab country.

The Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek said in turn after his meeting with the Iranian legislator in the capital of the Islamic Republic of Iran that all the crimes committed by the extremist groups in Syria and other jihadists and religious fanatics in the Middle East are “against Islam, human principles and human rights.” The Turkish Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek was on a two-day trip to Iran in order to speak with several Iranian officials, including the President Hassan Rouhani, about the possibilities to increase the bilateral cooperation and relations between Tehran and Ankara.

Of course, the meetings between the Parliament Speaker Cemil Cicek from Turkey and several senior Iranian officials also included talks about the Syrian conflict and the recent developments in the Middle East. However, it is to assume that the Turkish official and the officials in Tehran have discussed more than it has been announced after these meetings.

The chief negotiator from Turkey regarding the European Union (EU), Egemen Bagis, has stated in a newly published article in “The Telegraph” from London that Turkey will probably never become a member of this union. He has censured the “prejudiced attitudes” of the current members of the European Union (EU) in terms of a possible joining of Turkey.

Egemen Bagis, who is also Turkey’s EU Affairs Minister, added that the Turkish government is now more interested to hold specific negotiations on special access to the market in Europe – for example, like Norway. The EU chief negotiator from Turkey said that he is convinced that Ankara will end up like states such as Norway in the long run and this means that Ankara will be at the standards of the European Union (EU) and “very closely aligned but not as a member state” of this Union.

According to the chief negotiator from Turkey regarding the European Union (EU), Egemen Bagis, Ankara had suffered from several “prejudices” in both its treatment by the European Union (EU) and its defeated Olympic bid and that the EU would not “hurt” Turkey by these machinations, but that Europe is simply “hurting themselves” by such means and this kind of “prejudice” against Turkey.
