syria chemical weapons inspectors damascus

Damascus, Syria

United Nations: Ake Sellstrom & Angela Kane may arrive in Damascus today.

According to the U.N. deputy spokesperson, Farhan Hak, the both UN experts Angela Kane and Ake Sellstrom may arrive in the Syrian capital Damascus already today and this implies that the investigation whether chemical weapons were already used in the Syrian conflict seem to begin even earlier than is was already expected.

Angela Kane and Ake Sellstrom are the heads of the UN experts’ team to Syria in order to probe and investigate the claims about the use of chemical weapons (e.g. sarin nerve gas) in the Syrian conflict. Angela Kane is the UN disarmament chief and Ake Sellstrom is a known Swedish arms experts and has many experiences in terms of traces of the use of chemical weapons.

The U.N. deputy spokesperson, Farhan Hak, explained that the UN inspectors are able to act independently from the United Nations Secretariat and it seems that the deputy spokesperson of the United Nations (UN) had to explain this matter after the Russian government already stated that they hope for an objective and balanced investigation without double-standards.

Of course, just because the UN deputy spokesperson, Farhan Hak, said that the inspectors would act independently from the United Nations Secretariat this means nothing. However, one can just hope that Ake Sellstrom and Angela Kane are more objective and balanced than other UN personnel.

However, it is already clear that the UN experts will investigate the area of Khan al-Assal near the Syrian city of Aleppo. In addition, the experts of the United Nations (UN) are allowed to investigate three locations (including Khan al-Assal / Khan al-Asal) in Syria.

The mission might be expanded but this depends on the results of the initial investigations whether chemical weapons were already used on Syrian soil in the recent two years and also on the decisions of the Syrian government in the capital, Damascus. However, the United Nations (UN) and the Syrian government have already shown signs of willingness to eventually extend this investigation by Ake Sellstrom and Angela Kane in Syria.

The United Nations Secretariat announced the agreement with the Syrian government in Damascus about the mission on last Wednesday. Followed by statements of Ban Ki-moon and the Syrian government that both sides have agreed on the important modalities of this mission in Syria and that the negotiations between Damascus and the UN officials were very positive.

The chemical weapons inspectors of the United Nations (UN) will investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons during the Syrian war and conflict. The UN experts will stay in Syria for about two weeks and according to the recent statements, the heads of the mission may arrive in the Syrian capital Damascus already today (as mentioned).

The UN experts and heads of this mission will study three locations where it is assumed that chemical weapons have been used in attacks. This includes the chemical attack in Khan al-Assal (Khan al-Asal), which is an outskirt of the strategically important Syrian city of Aleppo (Halab).

However, the Russian investigation of this attack by foreign-supported terrorists in Khan al-Assal against Syrian soldiers and civilians on March 19 (2013) has already shown that sarin nerve gas was used by the terrorist group in their attack. The attack has caused the death of over 30 Syrians.

The United Nations (UN) is in possession of the documents and details about the Russian investigation of samples from the place of attack in Khan al-Assal. While the investigation by Russian experts have triggered statements of Russian ministers that they found “first-hand evidence” for the use of sarin nerve gas by terrorists in their attack against Syrians in Khan al-Assal, the United Nations (UN) is still very quiet after UN officials have received the detailed information of the investigation of the samples from Khan al-Asal by Moscow.

The UN experts in Syria are allowed to talk with Syrian doctors, chemical attack victims and witnesses. However, there are less eye witnesses in Khan al-Assal since the last perpetrated massacre against over 100 Syrian civilians by the foreign-supported terrorists.

The UN experts will submit a final report on their chemical weapons investigation in Syria to the United Nations (UN). The first detailed report is to expect in about two weeks. However, the statements by the UN experts in Syria will be very interesting in the upcoming days.
