Russia: UN Report on Syria Ignores Factual Evidence

Damascus, Syria

Damascus will submit a comprehensive list of its chemical weapons within a week.

While Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad has repeated in a new interview with the often biased Fox News that Syria will comply with the Russia-US deal on the chemical weapons arsenal and that Damascus is ready to act in line with the Russian initiative and to stick to the agreement between Washington and Moscow, several Russian Ministers have criticized the published UN report on the use of chemical weapons in suburbs of the Syrian capital, Damascus.

Beside the statements by Bashar al-Assad in his new interview regarding the Russia-US deal on Syrias chemical weapons stockpiles, also the Syrian government in Damascus has stated that it will submit a detailed list of its chemical arms stockpiles within one week and in line with the deal between the United States and Russia.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov confirmed the readiness by the Syrian government to comply with the plan to put its chemical weapons arsenal under an international supervision and added that Moscow has received assurances by the Syrian governance that they will submit a detailed list of its chemical weapons arsenal within a week after his meeting with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem (al-Moallem) in Damascus. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister added that the Syrian governments gave Moscow the assurance that this will be done on time.

In line with the new agreement between the United States and Russia regarding the chemical weapons arsenal on Syrian soil, which was announced on the last weekend after talks between the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, the Syrian government will provide a detailed list of its inventory of chemical weapons within a week and hand over all the components of its program by mid-2014.

The Syrian government and President Bashar al-Assad have repeatedly stated that they will act in line with the Russia-US agreement regarding its chemical arsenals and that they are interested in a general disarmament of the Middle East. Syria’s President al-Assad and the Syrian government in Damascus have also again rejected the US claims that the Syrian Army would have been responsible for the chemical weapons attack in suburbs of Damascus on August 21. Al-Assad said in his new interview that they have not used chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict and the fights against the armed terrorist groups, which are supported by foreign governments.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov meanwhile said after his meeting with Bashar al-Assad and Syria’s Foreign Minister al-Muallem (Moallem) in Damascus that the recently published UN report about the use of chemical weapons in Syria ignores the evidence that was provided by the Syrian government to the United Nations (UN). Sergei Ryabkov added that the documents regarding the use of chemical weapons on August 21 were “very factual” and not political.

The Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia further criticized that the UN report does not include the information about the evidence, which was given to the head of the UN mission, Swedish arms expert Ake Sellstrom. Sergei Ryabkov said that evidence related to the chemical weapons attack in suburbs of Damascus in August was given to Ake Sellstrom, but added that Russia is quite upset that this evidence “did not receive adequate attention in the report.”

In the meantime, it is also known that the Syrian government has handed over new evidence to the Russian administration in Moscow. This evidence should confirm the use of chemical weapons by the terrorists in Syria. However, Russia still needs to analyse the new evidence given by the Syrian government.

While the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed that Moscow will also submit new evidence to the UN Security Council (UNSC) and that this evidence implicates that the foreign-backed terrorists were behind the chemical attack in suburbs of Damascus in August, it is already a fact due to the information of the UN report on the use of chemical weapons in Syria that one of the alleged attacks was fabricated by the so-called “Syrian rebels”. Further, the eye-witnesses of the “Syrian rebels” have thus lied towards the UN inspectors about this attack in one of the areas around Damascus.
