Syria - Maaloula (Ma’loula)

Russia rejects division of Syria and shows concerns about the killing of Christians by extremists in the Syrian conflict.

The Russian administration in Moscow doesn`t accept a division of Syria, according to the statements by the Administration Chief of Staff, Sergei Ivanov. The Administration Chief of Staff of the Kremlin said in Stockholm that Moscow rejects a division of Syria, while Russia believes that this is an internal affair of the Arab state.

Sergei Ivanov, the Kremlin Administration Chief, further said to some reporters in Stockholm yesterday regarding a division in terms of Syria that Moscow does not accept this. He pointed out that Russia is convinced that this is an internal affair of Syria and that foreign states are not able to influence it.

However, Christians are killed in Syria by the foreign-backed extremists (e.g. in Maaloula). The Administration Chief of Staff Sergei Ivanov underlined in his statements in Stockholm that he has to say about it that Christians are killed in Syria and he showed concern about the killing of Christians and other religious minorities by foreign-backed terrorist groups in the Syrian conflict.

The official from Russia also added that the Russian administration will not always make use of its veto right at the UN Security Council (UN) only on the basis of its principle. The Administration Chief of Staff of the Kremlin also said that he was asked this question at the conference on security in Stockholm on Saturday and that he answered it with “no”. The Russian President Vladimir Putin said in principle the same at his recent speech at the meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

According to the statements by the Russian Administration Chief of Staff Sergei Ivanov from the Kremlin, the complete situation will become a quite different matter when it is finally proven, without doubts, who has used chemical weapons in attacks on Syrian soil during the conflict and crisis in the Arab country.

Ivanov said in his statements that it has to be proven without doubts and that the matter will become quite different when it is really “clear, honestly and unequivocally proved” who has used such chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict. And as long as it is not proven, Russia will have the same stance as now.

The Russian Administration Chief of Staff Sergei Ivanov explained further that Moscow may change its stance on Syria and the conflict in the Arab country if it is clearly proven that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his government in Damascus are cheating.

But as long as this is not proven without doubts, Moscow will not change its position on Syria or on the conflict in the Arab country. Ivanov answered such questions regarding Syria and the stance of Russia at the meeting of the tenth conference of the London International Strategic Studies Institute in Stockholm yesterday.

The Russian official further stated that he simply speaks “theoretically and hypothetically” in terms of such matters and underlined that it may happen that Moscow changes its position if it is without doubts proven “that Assad cheats.” He added that he can imagine what the “international community” will do in the case if it “is established that chemical weapons were used by the Syrian official authorities and the opposition” in the Syrian conflict.

And to the question about possible steps and decisions of Russia regarding the situation in Syria and the killing of Christians by armed extremists and Al-Qaeda-linked groups on Syrian soil (e.g. in the Christian village of Maaloula), the official from Russia answered that Russia will counter this “only by diplomatic ways” because there is nothing else that Moscow could do. Ivanov added, “What else can we do?”
