CSTO Rejects any Military Intervention in Syria

Russia condemns the terrorism in Iraq and Syria.

On Monday, seven member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) have jointly rejected any use of military force against Syria and the representatives of these member countries of the CSTO urged the resolving of the Syrian conflict through political, diplomatic and peaceful ways. The member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) also rejected any military intervention in Syria.

A meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) took place in Sochi on Monday. Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is a so-called intergovernmental military alliance which was signed in 1992.

Among the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) are Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) may become the organization that monitors the destruction of the chemical weapons arsenal in Syria and will take care about the security and safety of the UN inspectors and the experts of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said at a press conference after the meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Sochi that the member states of the CSTO reached a consensus that the settlement of the crisis and conflict in Syria is possible by political and peaceful means and that any military action against Damascus will only lead to dire consequences for the Syrian people and the entire region of the Middle East. Vladimir Putin added that any military act against Syria by external powers will be a flagrant violation of the international law.

According to the Russian President, such a scenario of a military strike against Syria could lead to a destabilization of the entire situation in the Arab country and even is able to destabilize the whole region of the Middle East. Vladimir Putin added that every side has to use all available opportunities to decrease the violence and bloodshed in Syria and that there has to be a dialogue between the Syrian governance in Damascus and the so-called “opposition” outside the country.

The representatives of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) at the meeting in Sochi have appreciated the efforts by Moscow to resolve the Syrian conflict through diplomatic, political, and peaceful measures and underlined that they support the Russian proposal and the agreement between the United States and Russia on the chemical weapons arsenal in Syria. The representatives of the member states have also voiced their support for the efforts to resolve the crisis in the Arab country and stated that the sovereignty of Syria must be preserved.

Russia’s President Putin also warned against the current spread of terrorism and violence in troubled countries like Syria, Libya, Lebanon, Nairobi, and said that the spread of terrorism represents a real threat to the member countries of the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization).

Putin added that these armed terrorists and gangs who are currently active in such troubled countries do not appear out of nothingness and that these terrorists won’t simply disappear into nothingness. Afterwards, Russia’s President underlined that the spread of terrorism across such countries is a very real threat and issue, which is able to affect any member state of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

Also the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov spoke about Syria, the Syrian conflict and the threat of terrorism for the member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) at the meeting in the Russian city of Sochi on Monday.

Russia’s In the meantime, the Foreign Ministry in Moscow condemned the terrorist attacks in Iraq and said in a statement that there could be a connection between the successive terrorist attacks in Iraq and the terrorists and events unfolding on Syrian soil.

The statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow said that “what raises concern is the fact that the intensifying terrorist activism in Iraq is directly linked to the events in neighbouring Syria” and implied that all these groups of terrorists could share connections to Al-Qaeda.
