A powerful bomb has rocked the Syrian capital Damascus, and it was reported that heavy gunfire was heard after the incident.

The bombing at the entrance to the capital’s northeastern neighborhood of Qaboun on Monday left several people dead and many others injured, the official SANA news agency reported.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and it is not immediately clear what the target of the bomb blast was.

On Thursday, a massive car bombing in a residential area near the headquarters of the ruling Baath Party and the Russian Embassy in the Mazra’ah neighborhood of Damascus killed at least 53 people and injured more than 200 Syrian citizens.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying the explosion was “carried out by armed terrorist groups linked to al-Qaeda that receive financial and logistic help from abroad.”

Thursday’s bomb blast was one of the deadliest to hit the Syrian capital since the outbreak of violence in Damascus nearly two years ago.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security personnel, have been killed in the violence, and several international human rights organizations say the foreign-sponsored militants have committed war crimes.

The Syrian government says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and there are reports that a very large number of the militants fighting the Syrian government are foreign nationals.
